The multi-dimensional Baird Jones (1955-2008) wore many hats in the 1980s as a party promoter, curator in nightclub and galleries, East Village Eye gossip columnist, photographer, and latter day member of Colab. In 1985 Jones played paparazzi stalking artist Mark Kostabi and photographing him with East Village art celebrities and scenesters. These photographs were exhibited in a seies of “Kosthappenings” held at galleries in the EV, LES and South Bronx. This photograph taken at one of these “Kosthappenings” (see identically matted photos in background) was exhibited at a later “Kosthappening” at Ground Zero Gallery in 1986, its presence documented in a photograph on page 102 in Baird Jones’ lively book about this period, “Mark Kostabi and the East Village Scene,” 1983-1989, (Matteo Editore, 2003).
Baird Jones’s death in 2008 received wide media coverage. This is a rare and unique work by a memorable and prolific figure of the 1980s whose own creative endeavors have yet to be fully understood and appreciated.
