The blueprint for the selection of the art and ephemera now featured on the inventory page of the website Gallery 98 is the out-of-print book ABC No Rio Dinero: The Story of a Lower East Side Art Gallery. Published in 1985, the book recounts the history of the politicized alternative art scene that emerged in downtown New York in the late 1970s and early 1980s. It centered on the artist group Collaborative Projects Inc. (Colab) and two alternative art spaces, Fashion Moda in the South Bronx and ABC No Rio on the Lower East Side. This youthful scene launched many successful careers and set the tone for much of the art that followed in the late 1980s and 1990s. With its abundance of images and period articles, The ABC No Rio book, now online at the 98 Bowery website, is the indispensable and much-cited source for information about this key moment in art.
On this page, art and book collectors can purchase one of the few remaining copies of ABC No Rio Dinero: The Story of a Lower East Side Art Gallery in a deluxe package that also includes the original poster/mailer produced to promote the book in 1985. This rare poster/ mailer is itself a collectible object that was featured in the exhibition “Looking at Music: Side 2,” Museum of Modern Art, 2009.
