John Ahearn, South Bronx Hall of Fame Closing-Party Invitation, 1979. Offset print on business card, approx. 2 x 3 in.
John Ahearn’s exhibition of painted, cast-in-plaster portraits of South Bronx residents was one of the defining exhibitions of Fashion Moda’s first years. Ahearn attracted the neighborhood’s attention by making cast-plaster portraits of volunteers right on the street outside the gallery. The gallery’s walls were soon covered with sculptures and the South Bronx Hall of Fame climaxed with a jam-packed closing party. This is the small, slightly bigger then a business card invitation for the party at the gallery. Only four invitations to this historic event are known to still exist.
In 2012, the 1979 casts were exhibited again at the Frieze Art Fair in New York in a recreation of Ahearn’s South Bronx Hall of Fame exhibition.
