Gallery 98’s recent acquisition of a large collection of Night and Details has put the spotlight on our extensive inventory of downtown periodicals from the 1970s and 80s. Charting the changes taking place in art, music, and fashion; these alternative print publications are a great example of the do-it-yourself ethos that fueled downtown New York’s creative spirit during a golden era. They would soon give way to the blogs and digital magazines that rose with the Internet in the 1990s.
Not surprisingly, Andy Warhol led the way with his magazine Interview (founded in 1969). Anton Perich was an Interview contributor before founding Night (1978). Leonard Abrams started the East Village Eye (1979) to fill the void left after the closing of the East Village Other (1965-72). Annie Flanders was fashion editor at the Soho News (1973) before starting Details (1982). Kim Hastreiter and David Hershkowits, the founders of Paper (1984), were also alumni of the Soho News. NY Talk (1984), a give-away paper distributed through upscale retail outlets, had top contributors and memorable covers.
