Baird was a representative participant in the East Village art scene, where art was exhibited not just in galleries but also in nightclubs and other so-called “alternative spaces.” He was a late-joining member of the pioneering downtown artists’ group Collaborative Projects, Inc., which had attracted attention with the “Times Square Show” (1980) and helped establish the art spaces Fashion Moda (in the South Bronx) and ABC No Rio (on the Lower East Side).
