Gallery 98 has now posted Andy Warhol Ephemera – Part 2, an online exhibition featuring some of the announcement cards, posters and publications from after the artist’s death on February 22, 1987. Posthumous ephemera have an interesting story to tell. As successful as Warhol was in life, the full range of his creativity and prodigious production only emerged after his death. Andy Warhol Ephemera – Part 2 fills out the artist’s history as it charts his ascent into the most rarified reaches of the artworld.
Andy Warhol’s unexpected death inspired tributes and magazine cover stories. His early passing cemented his legendary status, and many cards created for posthumous exhibitions feature his portrait. There was no shortage of unseen work to market, such as, variations of Warhol classics like Campbell’s Soup Cans and Flowers, his early commercial illustrations, his films and photographs, unusual oddities, as well as, under-appreciated late works. Since the Warhol estate worked primarily with top-tier galleries, the quality of posthumous Warhol ephemera is especially high.
